The Genuine Fakes is the new hope of powerpop in Sweden. Their songs are fueled by rock and catchy singalong melodies. The band was formed in late 2005 in a basement in Sodermalm in Stockholm. Joey, Morty and Johnny, all of whom shared a love for stripes and moustaches, joined up and beautiful music came to be instantaneously. Influences from bands such as 90’s indie legends Popsicle from Sweden, The Posies (naturally), The Wildhearts, Fountains of Wayne, Weezer, Cheap Trick and Foo Fighters, to name a few, are forged in a way that creates a unique sound in this day and age. You’ve got beautiful harmonies layered on a powerful foundation of shimmering guitars, singing bass lines, noisy drums and distorted Hammond organ. The instrumentation is raw while the intricate vocal harmonies are sure to please the Beatle-junkies out there. The band delivers three and four part harmonies that is reminiscent of the theatrical quartets Jellyfish and Queen. A concertgoer perhaps described it best: “It’s Popsicle-rock with Beach Boys harmonies!” Merely two months after the band’s first rehearsal there was already a whole album’s worth of material written. The live debut was in January of 2006 and since then the band has played most of the local Stockholm rock clubs. The year was topped off with a critically acclaimed performance at the Rookie Festival in Hultsfred. This festival is the most important showcase for up-and-coming bands in Sweden, to which they were handpicked as one of 30 bands amongst thousands of applicants. In conjunction with the Rookie Festival the band released its first single, entitled Star. It quickly sold out and has been downloaded persistently from their website ever since. The trio got transformed into a quartet in early 2007, adding the organist Tommy to the permanent roster. Over these past couple of years The Genuine Fakes have evolved into a fierce live act. Add to that their recordings and you’ve got a force to be reckoned with. There’s a brand new band in town!
